Section 12 Flashcards
Define: soluble
Capable of being dissolved
Define: solute
the item being dissolved (the substance being dissolved in a solution [usually lesser quantity])
Define: solvent
the item which is doing the dissolving (the dissolving medium in a solution)
Define: suspension
if the particles in a solvent are so large that they settle out unless the mixture is constantly stirred or agitated (particles are over 1000nm in size)
Define: colloid
particles that are intermediate in size between those in solutions and suspensions form mixture known as colloid (dispersions) (1-1000nm in size)
If the solute state is Gas, then what is its solvent state?
Gas or Liquid
If the solute state is Liquid, then what is its solvent state?
Liquid or Solid
If the solute state is Solid, then what is its solvent state?
Liquid or solid
Define: the Tyndall Effect
It occurs when light is scattered by colloidal particles dispersed in a transparent medium
Define: electrolyte
A substance that dissolves in water to give a solution that conducts electric current
State the three factors that affect the rate of dissolution (dissolving)
-Increasing the surface area of the solute. -Agitating a solution. -heating a solvent (changing temperature)
Define : saturated solution
A solution that contains the maxium amount of dissolved solute at a give temperature and pressure
Define: unsaturated solution
A solution that contains less solute than a saturated solution under extreme conditions.
DefineL supersaturated solution
A solution that contains more dissolved solute than a saturated solution (at a given temperature and pressure).
Define: solubility (of a substance)
the amount of that substance quired to form a saturated solution with a specific amount of solvent at a specified temperature.
Define: hydration
the solution process with water as a solvent
State Henry’s Law
The solubility of a gas in a liquid is dirently proportional to the partial pressure of that gas on the surface of the liquid (Pressure has a greater effect on the solubility of gases in solvents than it does on iquid
What effect does temperature have on solubility and what information does a solubility curve provide to a chemist?
Basically, the solubility of substances increase with temperature. Solubility curves tell a chemist how much of a substance will dissolve ina specific amount of solvent at a
Definel: Enthalpy of Solution
The net amount of energy absorbed as heat by the soliuon when a specific amount of solute dissolves in a solvent.
Define: concentration
The concentration of a solution is a measure of the amount of solute in a given amount of solvent of solution.
Define: molarity
the number of moles of solute in one liter of solution
Mathematical formula for molarity
Molarity (M) = amount of solute (mol)/volume of solution (L [always 1.00L]}
Define : molality
the concentration of a solution practice of a solution, expressed in moles of solute per kilogram of solvent
Mathmatical formula for molality
molality (m) = moles of solute/mass of solvent (kg [always 1l
