What is the purpose of the code of conduct?
- Moral code for POWs to help deal with pressures
- Guidelines to enable them to return with honor
When was the code of conduct established and by whom?
Established by president Eisenhower in August 1955 as a response to inconsistent and prejudicial action taken by US personnel during Korean War
When was the code of conduct modified
- 1977 by Pres Carter after Viet Nam POW experiences
- 1988 by Pres Reagan, to make it gender neutral

What is the 1st article of the Code of Conduct
I am an American, fighting in the armed forces which guard my country and our way of life. I am prepared o give my life in their defense.
What is the 2nd article of the Code of Conduct
I will never surrender of my own free will. If in command, I will never surrender the members of my command while they still have the means to resist.
What is the 3rd article of the Code of Conduct
If I am captured, I will continue to resist by all means available. I will make every effort to escape and aid others to escape. I will accept neither parole nor special favors from the enemy.
What is the 4th article of the Code of Conduct
If I become a prisoner of war, I will keep faith with my fellow prisoners. I will give no information nor take part in any action which might be harmful to my comrades. If I am senior, I will take command. If not, I will obey the lawful orders of senior prisoners, regardless of the branch of service.
What is the 5th article of the Code of Conduct
When questioned, should I become prisoner of war, I am required to give name, rank, service number, and date of birth. I will evade answering other questions to the utmost of my ability. I will give no oral or written statements disloyal to my country and it’s allies, or harmful to their cause.

I will never forget that I am an American, fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I will trust in my God and in the United States of America.
What are the Rights of POWs
- Sanitary protective housing/clothing
- Sufficient food to sustain good health
- Adequate medical care
- Facilities for proper hygiene
- Practice religious faith
- keep possessions except military related
- Send and receive mail
- Receive packages (non-contraband)
- Select representation (fellow POW)
- Receive humane treatment
- Request a copy of prisoner’s rights and responsibilities
- Request a copy of standards of conduct
What are the responsibilities of POWs
- State Name, rank, service number, and date of birth
- Obey lawful rules and regulations (UCMJ applies)
- Perform paid labor as required (not military, degrading, dangerous, unhealthy)
- Maintain military discipline (honors, customs, courtesies)
General Humane treatment of POWs
- Must at all times be humanely treated
- Unlawful act or omission is a breech of convention
- Specifically no physical mutilation or medical/scientific experiments
What must POWs be protected against
- Acts of violence
- Intimidation
- Insults
- Public curiosity
- Acts of reprisal
