Section 1.1 Cardiovascular system Flashcards
What does myogenic mean?
The capacity of the heart to generate its own impulses
What is the cardiac conduction system?
a group of specialised cells located in the wall of the heart, sending impulses to the cardiac muscles causing it to contract
What is the definition of a sinoatrial node?
A small mass of cardiac muscle found in the wall of the right atrium that generates the heartbeat. more commonly called the pace maker
What is the definition of atrioventricular node?
This node relays the impulse between the upper and lower sections of the heart
What is the definition of systole?
When the heart contracts
What is the definition of bundle of his?
A collection of heart muscle cells that transmit electrical impulses from the AVN via the bundle branches to the ventricles
What is the definition of purkinje fibres?
Muscle fibres that conduct impulses in the walls of the ventricles
What is the mnemonic of the conduction conduction system?
Sally (SAN) Always (Atrial systole) Aims (AVN) Balls (Bundle of his) Past (Purkinje fibres) Vicky (Ventricular systole)
What does the conduction system ensure?
That heart rate increases during exercise to allow the working muscles to receive more oxygen
