Section 1 : Universal - Make Hope Visible Flashcards
What is Brian Collins’ definition of design?
Hope made visible
What are the qualities of a good sketch?
It is easy to make, easy to understand and easy to change
What is exploratory sketching? Who made it prominent?
To sketch as you explore idea, made prominent by Milton Glaser. For example, when you’re searching for an idea, very often you’ll create a kind of ambiguous sketch of it. The brain looks at that and says ‘Ah, it could be this or that’ and then the hand transmits what the brain has observed and makes the sketch less fuzzy. Then the brain says ‘But maybe it should be like this’ and the hand accommodates again and this conversation between the hand and the brain results in the development of an idea
What is thinkering?
the ways in which people tend to learn and develop new ideas as they play around with whatever they’re working on
What is chunking?
Separating data into proper buckets or chunks
How can we use chunking in a design process?
Arrange chunks - giving precedence to critical stuff, holding back what’s less important, getting rid of what’s unimportant
What is thoughtful reduction? Who said it?
John Maeda - subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful
What can smart recombinations also be?
Combining something familiar with something that’s surprising. The familiar gets us in the door and the surprising keeps us engaged
Who came up with the me to we logo?
Brian Collins for Al Gore’s Alliance which was trying to establish an identity and rally public support for environmental efforts
What does Brian Collins say designers have to do in trying to make Copley concepts understandable?
Deal with the ratio of mass to information- where mass refers to the material and resources that go into producing something which the information is all the useful data you can extract from in
What are devices of wonder?
Elements that encourage inquisition
