Q

Describe Mau’s ‘lost in the woods’ theory.

A

If you’re lost in the woods, everything about your surroundings takes on added significance. Suddenly you have to navigate and negotiate every detail of the environment, processing all of it while trying to regain your bearings. People are in a hyperattuned state, thus making it an ideal time to experiment and speculate, because the mind is wide open and the senses are alive

Q

What is Mau’s ‘fog of war’ theory?

A

In the fog of war you make a decision based only on 20% of the information. In design, Mau felt that in terms of fate of ideas, the more tangential, unexpected ones, might only come to life during the civilian equivalent of the fog of war, in that brief window wherein people are lacking information and therefore less likely to prejudge
