Secretions Flashcards
Mucas/Saliva (contains mucas, water, and enzymes)
Source: mucosal cells of the GI tract, salivary glands
Function: -protects and lubricates the GI tracts
- moistens foods
- Helps form the bolus
-Facilitates taste
- Aids swallowing
Enzymes
Source: Salivary glands, stomach, small intestine, and pancreas
Function: - Chemically reals down food via enzymes
- chemically breaks down food
GI hormones (gastrin, secretin, cholecystokinin)
Source: Endocrine cells in the gastric pits, and endocrine cells in the mucosal lining of the small intestine
Function: Facilitate communication, and regulate GI motility and release of GI secretions
Bile
Source: Made in the liver; stored and released from the gallbladder
Function: Enables lipid globules to disperse in water
Pancreatic Juice (contains bicarbonate and enzymes)
Source: Pancreas
Function: Neutralizes chyme
- Provides enzymes needed for the chemical breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids
Gastric Juice (contains hydrochloric acid, enzymes, water, intrinsic factor)
Source: Exocrine cells of the gastric pits (mucus-secreting cells, parietal cells, and chief cells)
Function: -Provides enzymes needed for the chemical breakdown of some nutrients
- Hydrochloric acid is needed for forming chyme and activating some enzymes
- intrinsic factor is needed for absorption of vitamin D
