Secondary Thickening Flashcards
Year 1
Vascular cambium forms a ring
Year 2
Vascular cambium produces 2nd xylem (inside) and phloem (outside). Xylem becomes wood when laid down with lignin. This causes the expansion of the stem.
What happens in year 2 with the outward expansion of the stem?
The epidermis ruptures, causing more cork cells to be created by the Cork cambium to fill the gaps.
Xylem is responsible for?
Xylem is responsible for the transport of water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves.
Phloem
Phloem is responsible for the multidirectional distribution of nutrients.
