Secondary Activity Flashcards
What are secondary activities
Secondary activities involve making something. They may be seen as a system this system consists of inputs, processes and outputs
What is an example of a Raw material
A raw material could be a piece of tree
What is a semi-finished product
A semi-finished product could be planks of wood
What is a finished product
A finished product could be a table or door
What is an input and name four examples
These are things that we need to put in when we start
- Wooden planks
- Electricity
- Machinery
- Workers `
What is the process and name five examples
These are things we do to the inputs to turn them into semi-finished or finished products
- Measuring
- Cutting
- Moulding
- Chiselling
- Clamping
What is an output and name two examples
These are the things we have at the end
- Window frames
- Doors
What kind of factors might influence the location of a factory
- Raw materials
- Labour force
- Government/EU policy
- Markets
- Services
- Personal preferences
- Transport facilities
- Capital
Why must a factory need raw materials near the factory
If the raw materials are big or heavy, the factory will need to be close to them.If he factory is located far from the raw material, it would be too difficult and expensive to get them to the factory
Why must the market influence the location of a factory
Having access to markets means being close to the places where you are going to sell the product, and to the customer who are going to buy them. The closer you are the fewer transport costs you will have to pay to move your goods. It also means you can do it faster
Why must transport facilities be close when building a factory
All factories need to transport their finished product to the market-place.If the products are being sold in the same country as they are made, then good roads or rail transport is required, If the company is transporting to another country they need to be close to an airport or port. This is once again, in order to reduce costs
Why must the labour force have anything to do with the location of a factory
Labour force means the people needed to work in the factory. Therefore, factories must be build where there are enough worker, like towns and cities. Factories require different types of workers, for example un-skilled workers and highly-skilled university graduates
What does services have anything to do in the location of a factory
Services refer to things like electricity, water, sewage treatment and waste disposal, telephone, broadband and WiFi access.Companies need good quality services, so they only set up where these things are readily availiable
What does the Capital have to do with the location of a factory
Capital means the money the company needs to set up a factory. It may need to get investments from banks to help with these costs
What does government/EU policy have to do with the location of a factory
Government do many things to encourage companies to set up in their country. The Irish Government gives grants and incentives to companies to set up in Ireland and also has a low corporation tax rate, which again, is favourable for manufacturing industries intending to locate here
