Second Civil War Flashcards
Where was Charles in November 1647?
Charles I had escaped to the Isle of Wight because he thought that Parliamentary Governor of the Isle of Wight was a Royalist sympathiser. However Charles was a prisoner again.
What did Charles do during November 1647?
Charles opened negotiations with the Scots. He expected them to be more sympathetic to his demands, and the Scots expected Charles to agree to enforce Presbyterianism.
What was the Engagement 1647?
The Engagement was the terms agreed between Charles and the Scots.
What was agreed in The Engagement?
Charles allowed Presbyterian worship in England for three years. In the meantime, radicals such as separatists and Anabaptists would be suppressed by the Scottish army. The English army would be disbanded and Charles would have to rely on the Scots to defend him.
How did Parliament react to the Engagement?
It was viewed as treacherous by Parliament, and as a result parliament voted to not make any further approaches to the king and drew closer to the army and their views.
In the long term, it led them to begin contemplating whether they could manage without a king.
