Where does it normally affect?
Mainly scalp (dandruff in adults) and face
What age range is seborrhoeic dermatitis common in?
Babies under 3 months but can occur in adults
Symptoms of seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Rash:Erythematous & scaly
ITCH
Inflammation
Treatment for seborrhoeic dermatitis?
- Mild topical steroids
- Antifungal preparations
- Ketoconazole/metronidazole gel or shampoo
What is seborrhoeic dermatitis caused by?
Commensal yeast on skin
What is the development of seborrhoeic dermatitis associated with?
Immunosuppression due to the likes of HIV or use of drugs such as ciclosporin
Distribution of rash in newborn?
Cradle cap
Flexural surfaces
Napkin area
- May not be itchy*
Distribution of rash in adult?
Forehead
Nasolabial folds
Behind the ear
Anterior chest
Treatment for infants with seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Emollients +/- topical steroids
Treatment for infants with seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Emollients + topical steroids + topical antifungals
Example of antifungals?
Ketoconazole
Treatment of adults with SD if non-responsive?
Oral antifungals
