What are registered dentists legally allowed to prescribe?
The entirety of the BNF, however dental prescribing within the NHS is limited to drugs contained within the List of Dental Preparations in the Dental Practitioner’s Formulary
How to write a prescription
Legibly in ink stating the date, name and address of pt and the practice address
Age and DOB of pt
Names of drugs and preparations clearly using approved titles and no abbreviations
State the pharmaceutical form (tablet, liquid) and the strength
State dose and frequency
Quantity or volume to be supplied
If the preparation is to be taken ‘as required’ state a minimum dose interval and total quantity to be supplied
Sign the prescription in ink
Drugs and supplies to be kept in dental practice for medical emergencies
Adrenaline - 1ml ampoules or prefilled syringes of 0.5ml 1:1000 solution for intramuscular injection
Aspirin 300mg tablets
Glucagon for im injection 1mg
Glyceryl trinitrate spray 400 micrograms per metered dose
Midazolam oromucosal solution 5mg/ml for topical buccal administration
Oral glucose
Oxygen cylinder, two size D or two size Cd or one size E
Salbutamol inhaler, 100 micrograms per actuation
