What is the relevant legislation on what is considered discrimination?
Equality Act 2010
Diversity
Diversity is to do with acknowledgement of alterity among people in terms of their community, culture, beliefs, life experiences, individuality
NOT thinking ‘we are all the same’
Alterity
Otherness, with no difference in value
Equality
To do with fairness of opportunity and observing the rights of people so that their alterity is not discriminated against
As opposed to - some people are more equal than others i.e. some people are unfairly advantaged
Equity
Treats equals equally, and unequals unequally
Treating people justly does not mean treating everyone identically, if it disregards features of diversity that can place people at an unfair advantage is society
John Rawls the difference principle
Social and economic inequalities are to be arranged so that they are to the greatest benefit of the least advantaged
What is an example of a system set up with the difference principle?

Allport’s scale of prejudice
According to this model, if each layer of the pyramid is not interrupted it will escalate to the next
Antilocution
A form of prejudice in which negative verbal remarks against a person, group or community are made but not addressed directly

Instructing others to treat someone less favourably because of a protected characteristic
