“A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner” Analysis
Scrooges selfishness knows no bounds
(Lack of connectives adds pace to reflect the narrators exasperation)
-He has no redeeming features
“Solitary as an oyster” analysis
-Scrooges chosen way of life, (we are led to believe) it’s due to his greed and cruelty.
Possible redemption: pearl, (but oysters don’t always have pearls and the only way to know is once they’re open) -foreshadows redemption
(Reflects Malthusian beliefs which keep the financial divide)
“Hard and sharp as flint” analysis
His attitude towards others: cruel/ miserly.
Flint= dark grey and brittle. But shows how is attitude change could be easily ignited.
Symbolises and foreshadows potential redemption (and reflects dickens desire for change in society.)
“Decease the surplus population” Analysis
Scrooges view of the poor
(said to charity workers) -he is cruel and immortal: would rather the poor die that help.(Reinforces his belief in Malthusian economics) -he is not just selfish, but actively wishes death on the “inconvenient” poor
(Presents sympathy for the cratchits, who is the human face of ‘the poor’ that Scrooge sees as “surplus”)
“Fog…darkness” analysis
Reflects Scrooges morality -
Fog is his wilful ignorance, isolation and blindness to his affect on the suffering poor.
- he can’t see the world for how it really is (his views about the poor [Malthusian] are dehumanising)
What does “violent fit of trembling” show about Scrooge in his journey of redemption?
His fear - Still fighting the ghosts suggestions- but the change that transforms him must be real and permanent, so he hasn’t fully changed yet
