“Slowly ,gravely ,silently” Analysis?
Creates a solemn tone
The adverb, “gravely,” foreshadows the revelation of Scrooge’s tombstone, and has generally allusions towards death.
(+ is a direct contrast to the previous two spirits (as it’s silent and completely inhumane).
(The ghost is constantly “silent” to allow Scrooge to draw his own conclusions and take responsibility of his choices.?)
“Shrouded…black” Analysis?
Symbolic of the figure of death.
“Shrouded” “-true form hidden,
suggests that the future is mysterious/ ominous as it is always unknown( like the the Spirit’s form)
eerie description of the spirit wearing a “deep black garment” reflects the appearance of the Grim Reaper, a symbol of approaching death- foreshadows scrooges fate if he does not transform/ redeem himself.
“Reeked with crime…filth and misery” Analysis?
emphasises how dire the conditions are by showing the worst parts of London. Irony in that Scrooge is forced to recognise the suffering of who he’d previously been profiting from.
