“Robe…White fur” Analysis?
(Mysterious ,Warm, Pure.)/
(emphasises its purity and innocence). This gives the Spirit an impression of (moral) authority which highlights its didactic purpose within the text as a contradiction to scrooges Malthusian beliefs
“Yellow…Wolfish” Analysis?
(Description of Ignorance and Want) /The children are extremely poor and destitute, symbolising the reality of many working class children.
Animal imagery/ connotations of animalistic behaviour
-suggest the complete dehumanisation of the poor. + shows the savagery and cruelty of poverty
“Stale…Shriveled…devils” Analysis?
Abandonment of hope for the poorest
contrast from the jovial atmosphere of Christmas cheer we have seen previously in this Stave -particularly forceful and makes us take notice of the suffering within poverty. (Mirrors how Scrooge is also forced to notice)
“This boy is ignorance. The girl is want” Analysis?
Symbolic of poverty and how they’re treated by the wealthy (allegories of the social issues within Victorian Britain)
(Children: young an helpless evokes empathy from the reader. As they are so young, they cannot be held responsible, and so society is forced to take responsibility themselves.)
What is the symbolism of (boy) Ignorance?
The boy is a symbol for how society is ignorant of the struggles of the lower class+ struggles of children growing up in society-, because poverty is ignored
What is the symbolism of (girl) want?
As a result of societies ignorance, it creates people who want. (Don’t have) These wants are necessities that they need to survive but they don’t get, but due to the ignorance of the rich and how the rich treat the poor (surplus) these needs are never met, creating a never ending cycle of suffering.
