screening for periodontal disease Flashcards
what are the 6 ramfjord teeth
16, 21, 24, 36, 41, 44
how is a plaque index score taken
ramfjord teeth taken and split each into buccal, palatal and inter-proximal
0 = no plaque 1= plaque with probe use 2= plaque no probe use N = no score
score / 36 (x100) = %
how is a bleeding score taken?
ramfjord teeth taken and split into 4 sections, buccal, palatal, mesial and distal
1 = bleeding 0 = no bleeding
score / 24 (x100) = %
how do you determine if a patient is engaged or not? what does this mean?
<30% modified plaque score
<35% modified bleeding score
Or
<20% plaque score
<30% bleeding score
BSP
or
> or = to 50% improvement
only RSD if engaged patient
how is tooth mobility assessed?
0 = no movement
1 = 1mm movement
2 = >1mm movement
3 = severe movement
what is a BPE score of 0 and its treatments?
No BOP, no Plaque, pockets >3.5mm
No treatment needed other than reassurance and positive feedback.
what is a BPE score of 1 and its treatments?
BOP, no plaque, pockets >3.5mm.
OHI given
assess BOP
what is a BPE score of 2 and its treatments?
?BOP, Plaque present, pockets <3.5mm
OHI and removal of plaque retentive factors
assess BOP
what is a BPE score of 3 and its treatments?
?BOP, ?Plaque, pockets 3.5-5.5mm (first band semi visible)
Appropriate radiographic assessment
OHI and RSD and removal of PRF
UPON RE-EVALUATION
6ppc sextant:
no pockets deeper than 4mm? see code 2
pockets deeper than 4mm? see code 4
what is a BPE score of 4 and its treatments?
?BOP, ?Plaque, pockets >6mm (first band hidden)
Radiograph and 6ppc full mouth
OHI, RSD, PRF removal, assess and refer possibly
assess engagement? P+B?
what is a BPE score of * and its treatments?
furcation involvement
assess stage of furcation
OHI, RSD, PRF removal
how do you take a BPE?
divide into sextants - only use 8s if 7s and 6s are missing
7654, 321123, 4567 upper and lower
run probe along gingival pockets buccal lingual and inter-proximal and write down score of the worst site of the sextant
What is the BPE?
Its pros and cons
A screening tool for periodontal disease
Its pros:
- universally recognised
- quick to do
Limitations:
- not diagnostic
- false pockets can impact score
- does not indicate disease extent
What probe is used for a BPE?
BPE/WHO/CPITN probe
What probe is used for a 6ppc
PCP12
