Gum Illness / Diseases Flashcards
What is gingivitis and its associated findings / symptoms
Inflamed gingiva caused by plaque deposits on the tooth
Gingiva hyperplasia causing a false pocket - not true pocketing
Gingival erythema
Bleeding due to friable junction all epithelium
What is periodontitis and its presentations and symptoms
Attachment loss of gingiva and also alveolar bone resorption
Loss of attachment and apical migration of junctional epithelium creating a true pocket
Caused by RANKL > OPG imbalance
Symptoms can include:
Bad breath
Mobility
Sensitivity
‘Long in the tooth’
What periodontal diseases can be associated with implants?
Peri-implant mucositis
And
Peri Implantitis
What is peri-implant mucositis?
How is it diagnosed?
Inflammation of the mucosa surrounding an implant with NO evident bone loss
Diagnosed usually by BOP at implant mucosa with no sign of bone loss
What is peri implantitis, what are some clinical presentations and how may it be diagnosed?
Inflammation and bone loss around an osseoitegrated implant caused by microbial plaque and the patients immune response to the plaque, or excess implant cement, poor positioning etc
There is loss of attachment
Increased probing depths
Suppartion (pus formation)
Sometimes mobility
Diagnosed through LOA, radiographs etc
