Scott Bros Golf Flashcards
Updated 8/2021
Ernest Scott on swinging the triangle.
Triangle is ball at point and arm at setup position.
BS swing triangle back and swing back down to ball, holding triangle.
On impact swing apex of triangle level through the ball.
Your feet.
Left foot pointing at 12:00.
Left foot heel can raise-and lower going into impact.
Once left foot lowers, act like it is nailed in stone. Down Swing and rotate on it but never move it from its anchor.
Right foot SB open pointing to 1:00. On DS right foot will pivot from 1:00 to 0900 and you will be up on your toes and hold that pose as you watch your ball go down the fairway.
6/10/22 At top of BS, get shaft on plane and swing grip to establish what direction your release will be. Hit ball at 4:00 position and have feet offset so right toes are equal to middle of left foot. When you start DS by guiding your grip somewhere between your feet and the ball.
When you finish swing, you will be able to step forward and walk away from your pose.
So right foot will rotate a little with your triangle on downstroke into standing on toes right foot finish.
I tend to over rotate and cause a bad pull. TA too much inside also makes me pull, especially on shorter irons.
REMEMBER TO SHOULDER TURN AT ANGLE. Left shoulder at setup is level. Top of BS, LEFT shoulder is at 6:00.
REMEMBER hips angle up on BS and rock up forward on DS. This in unison with left shoulder rocking down on BS then right shoulder rocking down on DS. DO NOT IMPACT BALL WITH SHOULDERS LEVEL. Impact will be timed with right shoulder DOWN.
Turn finish. Turn and finish shot with belly button facing target.
Use middle of grip to square CF.
On shots go past the bookshelf when I feel confident.
Remember, my best of the best shots are SLOW. Do entire swing slow like Fred Couples. Watch the contact point for impact, especially on teed balls.
Make several practice swings before walking up to setup.
Practice swings should concentrate holding fold led by the end of grip entire circle of swing. Holding fold led by end of grip takes care of
1: transition
2: maintaining WIDTH
3: staying on plane
4: staying in SLOT
5: maintaining in to out swing PATH
6: RIGHT ELBOW underhand folding action. (Magic move)
7: Left and right weight transfers
8: Hip rocking action.
Keep swinging the grip the entire CIRCLE. Then walk to ball and setup.
- Most important. BS triangle using triceps glued to chest only, no forearms, DS using triceps glued to chest only, grip to left of ball to be in transition.
- On teed balls, make that loop that keeps my head back behind the ball. Also very important to get my right elbow back down in front of right hip like at address. This along with lining up grip and shaft is what makes the ball go straight.
Another key ingredient is to delay impact. When I am swinging using arms, I noticed I am impacting ball way before my impact position is reached. (CASTING). These are bad shots. Remember to swing triangle using triceps only and wait until I looped my weight , (naming this dance the “SWAP OUT”my head and tilted shoulder is going past me heading for the ball. ONLY THEN finish my pivot and release my shoulder turn into the ball. It really is that late in the swing before everything is setup to release my shoulders. It fells like I am swinging a chain, or sneaking up on killing a fly with a fly swatter.
This swap out is the most important part of the swing because I swap and pivot in unison and instantly tons of weight goes into the shot.
It feels like I pivot and throw a ball and chain at the ball when it is done right. The swing can be very slow, but it cannot be choppy. Must be smooth and timed like smooth dance steps. The ball goes far and I feel in control because it is a perfect dance to swing by.
SW pitches: use triceps for swing. Play ball back in stance to make airborne. Lead swing with grip and cutoff FF so ball doesn’t pull left.
SW: accelerate on all pitches, slowly but smoothly.
Even on the little bunker jumper. Take back to 8:00, gravity drop toward ball then make a small acceleration for a 10 yard pitch.
August 14, 2019:
Rick reminded me to “POSE for the picture “ to end the shot.
Also, Rick reminded me that the golf swing “IS A DANCE”!
HEURISTICS Needs attention: My guard against over pivot pulls! Normally I do this on first few drives. So watch my right toe pivot over extending causing a bad pull.
Heuristics reminder from driveway drills. On DS, pivot and swing a CHAIN. During this move I swap positions with the club. The club is thrown forward and my body is thrown backwards.
Pretending I am swinging a chain is a good swing thought. It helps me to hold my right shoulder back long enough that I don’t swing with my arm muscles. When I swing using my arm muscles, I accelerate too quickly into impact and run into the momentum of my smooth chain swing. This interferes with my goal of a smooth even swing and turns it into a jerky, loss of power swing with horrible results.
Also need to remember to swing teed up balls holding my spine back. This makes great drives. Perhaps all my shots should be holding my spine back. Need to experiment.
YouTube driver gives several tips.
- Longer and wider arc on one piece takeaway. Remember on higher teed ball to address the ball about 8 inches back, in middle of your stance. Cock right shoulder down so shoulders are tilted upward.
- Downswing means swing club down, not at the ball! You should be swinging a large circle AROUND YOUR BODY! The CF will start out facing the ground. It swings a long loop around your body then CF elevates and faces the ball, then CF starts facing the left side of fairway to draw the ball.
- AIM impact to hit top of tee.
- As you are lining up shaft to ball, your RIGHT ARM RETURNS BACK DOWN in front of your right hip. (This lines you up on your setup plane and makes your pivot automatic. Also makes you pose!)
I remember on a good golf shot I should be able to walk forward right out of my shot.
Jacobi Drive
Setup for normal drive, tilted shoulder and address 6 to 10 inches behind ball depending if you are hitting 6 iron or full driver. Hover club.
1: TA like the beginner YouTube video. R.E.M. To hinge up your hands.
2: Do normal weight shift and pivot.
3: On the DS, release the club early soon as hands reach right leg. This whips the club which is much faster than me pulling with my left into impact. It’s the towel snap effect I have been looking for.
Now just experiment to find your golden fit.
It works! I really have to put my weight into impact, and I can just go moderate for 150 yard drive.
Or I can take it to bookshelf or even go parallel if I feel confident.
My greatest problem today was hitting irons off the deck very fat. Problem is my aiming grip at the ball on my DS. This causes no clearance to hit ball because CF is smothering ball and this forces CF to hit ground before hitting ball.
Solution is to allow clearance. Aim grip to path about a foot left and parallel to ground. Remember the terrific drive you made on #8 playing with Rick and Jacobi. Emulate that and you will be fine. This gives an additional bonus of being able to hit 3wood off the deck with this clearance.
YouTube sage. Pivot on transition to get hips back to square then continue turning left until you are facing target.
As you are hitting ball you SB raising out of your squat.
Do not sway forward over the ball tee.
Do not sway without turning left hip completely left until your chest is facing target.
R.E.M. SOG says chest finishes high on drives.
Thumbs up then thumbs down on DS.
R.E.M. to dance and pose. Hip pivot SB complete position SWAP like Koufax pitch as you are hitting ball.
Use very light grip pressure in takeaway.
Keep hinged hands DISTANT from body and head as possible. A wide TA then a dew sweep is the way to hit teed balls.
TA TURN YOUR BACK COMPLETELY on target and buildup power!
Remember to swap positions when driving. Keep head behind the ball.
On BS, build up torque on inside of rear leg.
At setup you SB shoulders tilted to inclined swing. Right elbow should return to setup position in front of right hip on impact.
Starting DS, weight shift and pivot turning feet and pelvis ends up turning left so your pose , chest is facing target.
New drive heuristics 9/7/19
- Teed ball at second line on 5wood.
- Remember to flatten B.B. Swing on TA.
- Tilt right shoulder down as normal, setup 6 inches behind ball.
- TA slow and FLAT with light grip pressure. Weight transfer with feet and shoulder turn until back faces target. Build all the tension on inside of rear leg.
- Now the silver bullet. When you start your DS pivot, accelerate your right arm back to setup position in front of right hip. That is it. Remember to only swing the triangle back and forth using triceps and keep that width extension throughout entire swing.
Your swing thought is to brush the dew leading with your left and only concentrating on accelerating your right elbow back to setup position. You are not swinging with your hands, but you are SWINGING A CHAIN WITH TRICEPS in a controlled loop. Swing slow, but move right elbow quickly.
On impact just hit top of tee. Do not swing up into impact, just straight level at top of tee.
Update 9/11/19: on shoulder turn in BS, delay hinged up left hand until about 10:00 position, we want plenty of width here, and have completed hinge starting on DS like Sergio Garcia.
Also, raise right elbow high at top of BS then close and fold the right elbow on your pivot with feet part of DS. This creates mucho lag and much power and distance. Remember to return right elbow to right front of hip in going to impact. Swing slow and make great contact above all else.
Range 9.15.19. Teed up drives using flattened split grip swing.
I tried the hockey shot but doesn’t work well and pulls way left. Then I went back to the flying elbow full shoulder turn and it worked pretty solid on all shots, teed and off the deck. Even hitting 140 yard carries with 5 wood off the deck.
Here are the specifics:
- Split grip one inch space. Any more than that and shot pulls left.
- 5 Wood teed to second line from top. 5 Wood setup 6 inches behind ball. Driver teed to top line.
Driver setup 12 inches behind ball. - Full shoulder turn with flying right elbow.
- DS, do not swing (release the right) until hands come down to right hip. Remember to hold back the release and make certain you are swinging a chain!
- Stay on plane. Trace DS on shaft angle back to the ball. If I simply aim my right elbow down to the ball and get it returned to front of right hip, I will hit perfect shot. Just swing chain slow and watch club face square up going into impact.
- Remember to shift weight back then pivot and turn with your forward momentum into impact slowly and don’t forget to do anything.
Note: the larger the split grip, the stronger the left pull.
Heuristics: At the range everything worked as planned. Playing golf later in the morning most shots were excellent. In fact I hit best long iron ever on hole one. About 5 yards before the 150 marker I hit a straight bullet than landed on the green and rowed to eight feet from the pin!
Hit a couple of greens with short irons and both par threes I hit the green and was within four feet on hole #4.
On drives I was inconsistent. Mainly forgetting to pivot on FF and swinging too fast to impact. I hit fat a couple of times on teed balls. I hit to the right a few times.
So I need to practice slowing my swing and watching my impact on the ball to get more solid.
On BS keep your hands far away as you can from your right ear! – golf mag.
