Scotland - Political Effects of Union Flashcards
1
Q
Why was the Privy Council a reason why Scots were annoyed?
A
- In February 1708, the council was abolished.
- Scots believed the abolishment was unfair as it appeared to be a ‘breach of spirit’ and Scotland now had less representation in Parliament due to this which meant England could now have more control.
2
Q
Was the Privy Council guaranteed by the Acts of Union?
A
No.
3
Q
Why was a lack of Scottish Representation a bad effect of the union?
A
- There were only 9 acts which dealt with Scotland from 1727-1745
- Due to the Crown Jewels being locked away in Edinburgh, and the Great English Seal used for passing laws in Parliament instead of the British Seal or the Scottish, making Scotland felt they were just ‘a part of England’.
4
Q
Why were Scottish MPs unwelcome, and why were they looked down on?
A
- This is because when Scottish MPs travelled to London, they found themselves unwelcome and looked down upon. Adding to the fact that no key posts were allocated to any Scottish MPs and English interests were always a main priority compared to Scotland.
- This led to Scots feeling easily outvoted and ignored.
5
Q
What was the Scottish Court of Exchequer, and what did it give Scots in terms of positivity?
A
- This court was mainly responsible for customs and taxes.
- This gave the Scottish a chance to have experience with laws relating to trade and business
6
Q
Why was the Scottish Court of Exchequer a bad effect due to the union?
A
- It was a bad effect due to the fact that the court was led by an English Judge and an English Model.
- It was primarily a bad effect on Scotland because it was made very obvious that the Treaty of Union was made to protect English trading interests, and not to help Scottish trading grow, which raised a discontent within Scots.
7
Q
What was the Law that left a primarily bad effect on the union towards Scotland?
A
- Most of the previous Scottish laws were able to be kept.
- However on the 1st of July 1709, the English Law of Treason was extended to Scotland after the Jacobite revolution had begun.
8
Q
Why did Scots outrage towards England over the Law of Treason?
A
- This caused outrage among Jacobites and even non-Jacobites as they believed that England was abusing the union, as many Scots did not agree with this law.
