Contribution of immigrants to scottish economy

A

• a lot of huge construction schemes by immigrants , eg. forth road bridge
• Lithuanian immigrants imployed in coal industry (typically)
• Jewish immigrants improved tailoring and tobbaco inturtries in scotland( cheaper clothes and faster)
• Thomas lipton ( lipton teas) poor irish immigrants
• Some of the most well known buissneses in scotland were run by jews (eg. Goldbergs)
• Glasgow subway tunnell built in 1890s was largley built by irish immigrants

Impact of empire on Scotland

A

• The empire exhibition in 1901 and 1911 show off success of scotlands involvment in the Empire
• the empire brought such wealth to glasgow and it became known as second city of the empire (behind london)
• jute grown in empire, imported to dundee where it was processed by dozens of mills boosting economy
• many who were successful in the empire returned to scotland and invested wealth there, such as building large properties
• large locomotive works (such as in inverrurie or glasgow) exported trains all over the world and empire
• the empire also enabled some firms and individuals to make great commercial fortunes , as well as providing many middle class scots with sucsessfull careers
• the development of the language was also effecte by empire eg the word “thug” comes from india, meaning assassin
