The scope of an individual’s scope of practice is influenced by the:
- Context in which they practice
- Client’s health needs
- Levels of competence, education & qualifications of the individual nurse or Midwife

A
The scope of Nursing & Midwifery practice is that with nurses and Midwives are educated, competent and authorised to perform.

Midwifery Scope of Practice
A
- Midwives provide care to healthy, ‘low risk’ women and babies throughout the continuum of childbirth
- Midwives need to be aware of when the care of the woman and family falls outside their ‘scope of practice’
- ACM Guidelines for referral provide guidance on when it is appropriate to consult with or refer care to another health professional
- midwives who work outside their scope of practice can be subject to a notification to AHPRA for investigation into their professionalism. The outcome of this may be de-registration if a Midwife is found to be practicing in an unsafe manner.
