Hormones Flashcards
Oestrogen
Produced under the influence of FSH until the degeneration of the corpus luteum then the levels fall. Responsible for female characteristics, proliferation of endometrium and cervical and vaginal mucus.
Progesterone
Produced by the corpus luteum under the influence of LH. Enriched blood supply to endometrium, rise in body temperature 0.5 degrees, breast changes during menstruation
Relaxin
Maximum level between 38-42 weeks of pregnancy. Originates in the corpus luteum. Relaxes pelvis, softens cervix and suppresses uterine contractions, reduces oxytocin release
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Causes Graafian follicles to develop and enlarge, stimulates oestrogen
Luteinising Hormone (LH)
Rising oestrogen causes a surge of LH and FSH prior to ovulation. Progesterone inhibits a new rise unless there is no pregnancy and the corpus luteum degenerates about 14 days after ovulation
Prolactin
If produced in excessive amounts it will inhibit ovulation. Assists in production of breast milk.
