Scientific process Flashcards
What is a Dependent variable
The variable that is measured
E.G: Whether Photosynthesis occurs
What is an Independent variable
The variable that is intentionally changed
E.g: whether or not a plant receives light
What is a fixed/constant variable
Variables that are kept the same throughout the experiment
NOTE: except independent variable
What is the control of an experiment.
The control of an experiment is a second set up in a experiment that allows a comparison. For example: A plant that receives light vs A plant where light is taken away
Qualitative data
Descriptive data: Colour, sex, absence or presence.
Quantitative data
Numerical data: height, mass, length, or number.
Continuous data
Data that has joined values or in between values. EG: height, 180cm-200cm
Discontinuous data
values that are discrete from one another.
validity
Refers to the experimental procedure:
All plants should have been the same species
Reliablity
Refers to the result:
Repeat the experiment
Increase sample size
name the four types of graphs
Line graph ,histogram, bar graph and pie chart.
when must we use a line graph
show the relationship between two types of information where the independent variable is continuous.
when must we use a bar graph
shows different categories of data and are used when the independant is discontinous
when must we use a histogram
have connected bars that display continuous data that fits into groups or categories
when must we use a pie chart
Are circular charts that are divided into sectors and used to compare parts of a whole. used for discontinuous info
