Cell Organisation Flashcards
What determines what type of cell a cell is
The structure of the cell
What are the Levels of organisation
Cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, organisms
What is a cell membrane
Forms the outer boundary of all cells and surrounds the cytoplasm. It can control which substances enter and exit the cell.
What is a cell wall
Rigid outer layer found only I plant cells.
It protects the inner parts of the cell and gives the cell its shape
What is cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance that surrounds the nucleus. Contains dissolved substances, gives the cell its shape, acts as a solvent for water soluble substances and acts as a storage area for insoluble molecules
What is a Nucleus
Cells control centre.
Regulates cellular activity and contains DNA
Is surrounded by cell membrane
What is mitochondria
Organelles are responsible for process called cellular respiration.
Oxygen combines with sugar to provide cell with energy it needs to function.
What is the formula for cellular respiration
Oxegyn + sugar turns into carbon dioxide + water + energy
What Is endoplasmic reticulim
A network of membranes involved in chemical reactions and fluid storage
What are ribosomes
Small, round structures which are attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulim or found floating freely inside the cytoplasm. They make proteins inside the cell
What are Valocoules
Fluid filled organelles that occur in the cytoplasm of most plant cells . It contains cell sap, allows the cell to maintain its shape, store water and substances and aids in digestion and excretion of waste
What are plastids
Membrane bound structures found only in plants
What is a chloroplast
They are plastids that contain green pigment and are responsible for creating food for the plant during photosynthesis
What are chromoplasts
Present in vegetables and flowers and contain red yellow and orange pigment .
What are leucoplasts
Colorless plastids that store starch
