Scientific Method Flashcards
Hypothesis
The most logical explanation for what you just observed.
Steps of the Scientific Method
Observation, hypothesis formation and logical interpretation, hypothesis testing, and data analysis and interpretation.
Variables
- Dependent
- Independent
- Experimental
- Control
Dependent Variable
- The variable that is typically the recorded data that is dependent on the independent variables.
- Will never be the experimental variable.
Independent Variable
- The variable that which the scientists are changing or controlling.
Almost always the experimental variable - If “time” is involved, time becomes the experimental variable.
Experimental Variable
- Almost always the independent variable
- If “time” is involved, time becomes the experimental variable.
Control Variable
- The variable that should remain constant.
- Also known as “constant variables.”
Groups
- Experimental
- Control
Control Groups
- Positive Control
- Negative Control
Experimental Group
-The group of the test subjects that receives the variable beings examined by the hypothesis.
Negative Control
- The group of the test subjects that should give a negative response with respect to the hypothesis.
- Also known as the “Placebo” Group.
Positive Control
-The group of the test subjects that should give a positive result with respect to the hypothesis.
Presentation of Variables: Graphing
- Present “cause and effect”
- The independent variable is displayed on the x-axis.
- The dependent variable is displayed on the y-axis.
- Need titles and units
