Scientific Method Flashcards
What are the steps of the scientific method?
observation. question. hypothesis, prediction, experiment or test, results, theory.
What is observation
something that can be witnessed or recorded
what is a question
I wonder… How
What is a hypothesis
a possible explanation for a single
observed phenomenon. Statement,
predictive, 1 variable.
What is a prediction
If… then…
What is a experiment or test
procedure carried out to
provide information and test validity of
hypothesis
What is a result
what you found from experiment
What is a conclusion
summarize how your results
support or contradict your original
hypothesis
What is a theory
set of tested hypotheses that gives an
overall explanation of a system (a model).
Why can’t science prove a hypothesis is true?
Because theories can never be proven and
are dynamic (always changing →improving
with more data).
Independent Varbiable
manipulated variable (cause)
Dependent Variable
responds to change in independent (effect)
control group
group under the same conditions as the other groups with no change to independent variable
treatment group
group under same conditions, but the independent variable is changed
controlled experiment
experiment where the researcher manipulates the independent variable (used to show causation)
