Cuvier

Lyell and Hutton
Established geology as a science. Advocates for uniformitarianism. Earths geology is the result of long periods of slow and steady change. Not just cataclysmic events.
Lyell and Hutton’s 2 Big Ideas
- Small changes can lead to big changes given enough time.
- Earth must be very old.
Why did everyone think that Earth was very young?
The old testament dated earth to be about 6000 years old. Radioactivity made earth hotter than an old earth would appear.
Lamarck
Gave the first comprehensive hypothesis/theory of evolution
Lamarcks Theory of Evolution
Use and disuse leads to more or less prominent traits. Requires inheritence of aquired characteristics, though evolution was steady process toward greater complexity and better adaptation.
Erasmus Darwin
Thought all life had roots in more simple organisms
Alfred Wallace
Independently developed a natural selection theory.
