Natural Selection Flashcards
Natural Selection
theory of the mechanism of evolution, how and why life changes.
How and why life changes
Some organisms w/in a population have traits that allow them to survive better and reproduce better. These traits are likely to be passed on and increase in frequency.
5 Darwin Observations Lead to Natural Selection
- Organisms have the ability to reproduce at a rate that would allow them to grow exponentially
- Populations generally remain stable over time
- Resources are limited
- Individuals in a population vary in their characteristics
- Much of that variation is heritable
3 Principles of Natural Selection
- With more individuals than an environment can support a struggle for survival takes place between individuals in a population
active struggle
e.g fighting over territory
passive struggle
e.g plants finding soil purchase and growing faster than others
e.g. avoiding predation
Outcome of struggle…
is not random.
Individuals with better adapted traits will survive more and be more likely to reproduce.
3. Unequal survival and reproduction leads to a gradual accumulation of favorable characteristics.
Where does Natural Selection Occur?
The population level. Ecosystem level involves procurement for physical resources (H2O, air, soil)
