Darwin Flashcards
History of Charles Darwin
1809-1882, shares the same birthday as Abraham Lincoln. English Naturalist.
Erasmus
Darwins grandfather, famous botanist.
The Beagle Voyage
At 22 Darwin went out on a 5 year voyage on the HMS Beagle. South America. Published on the Origin of Species in 1859 to achieve priority over Alfred Wallace
Beagle voyage Findings
- Different species in different parts of the world occupy similar habitats.
- Fossils from a geographic region resemble other fossils as well as living organisms from that region.
- Galapagos Finches. 600 miles west of Ecuador, volcanic geologically young – goldilocks environment to observe evolution. Island finches resemble mainland species with a few differences.
Finches
Darwin saw the finches had unique traits suited for the food source on their island.
1. Ground Finch – large powerful beaks for nuts and seeds
2. Tree Finch – Slender beaks for picking insects from bark
3. Woodpecker Finch – Pointy beaks for picking insects from cacti.
Biological Evolution
Changes that have occurred in organisms over the history of life on earth.
