Science U3 L2 Flashcards
What is most of the solid part of Earth made up of?
Rock
Define rocks.
naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals that may include organic matter.
(some rock made of nonmineral material that may be inorganic)
List the processes that can change rock.
- weathering, erosion, and deposition
2. temperature and pressure
Define weathering
process by which water, wind, ice and changes in temperature break down rock
Weathering breaks down rock into fragments called what?
sediment
Erosion
process by which sediment is moved from one place to another
Deposition
the process by which sediment comes to rest
Describe how temperature and pressure change rock.
- If temp and pressures are high enough rock can change into metamorphic rock.
- If they are so high they can melt into magma
- If magma reaches the earth’s surface it is called lava
What are the classes of rocks?
- Sedimentary
- Igneous Rock
- Metamorphic Rock
Sedimentary
forms when minerals that form from solution or sediment from older rocks get pressed and cemented together
Metamorphic rock
forms when pressure, temperature, or chemical processes change existing rock
Igneous rock
forms when magma or lava cools and hardens to become solid
Rock cycle
process in which rock changes from one type to another
What are the two types of vertical movements in Earth’s crust?
Uplift and Subsidence
Uplift
rising of regions of the crust to higher elevations
it increases the rate of erosion on rock
