mantel

A

medium level elements more dense than crust. mantel is in the middle and thickest layers

Q

core

A

Much more dense than mantel. Full of dense IRON Nickle and other heavy elements.
Produces a magnetic field that protects the earth from ions from the sun.

Q

why does formation of earth spread out

A

At formation of earth the different densities separated out. Because of GRAVITY!!!!!
planetary differentiation

Q

lithosphere

A

Outer most layer- solid, Crust and upper level of mantel. Seems to float on bottom layers and move around.

10
Q

Convection currents take place in the Mantel

A

Convection currents bring up hot material from deep inside the earth and bring them into contact with the lithosphere. Causes volcanoes and motion in the lithosphere.

16
Q

continental and oceanic(for o)

A

one plate is pushed under forms deep trench and volcanoes form further in the plate.

17
Q

continental and oceanic(for c)

A

mountains form (usually underwater) new crust fills in the gaps.

18
Q

continental and continental(divergent)

A

rifts form (valleys) new crust can fill in those gaps.

19
Q

divergent boundaries

A

moving apart

20
Q

transformative

A

sliding past each other. No new land forms but lots of earth quakes.

21
Q

magnetic stripping

A

Because the earths magnetic poles are switching periodically. The rocks that form from divergent plates trap that magnetic signature in them. In alternating patterns with the center being the mid- Atlantic ridge.
