absolute and relative dating Flashcards
law of superstition
Younger rock layers tend to be on top of older rock layers.
law of cross-cutting relationships
Some igneous rocks jet up through older rocks. they must be younger than any layer they pass through.
law of original horizontally
All rocks start off horizontal but then might tilt due to some activity.
fossils
Some remains or trace of a once living organism that is preserved in rock. Index fossils help us tell the age of the rock by identifying when the fossil was made.
absolute dating
determining the exact age of a thing.
half lives
The amount of time it takes for half of a radioactive element to decay. By determining the amount of elements decayed and not decayed we can figure its age.
why is radiation dangerous?
It causes damage to cells and to your DNA (by ionizing them)
short half lives
Are more dangerous right now but danger declines over time.
long half lives
Are more dangerous because they are radioactive for a very long time.
