Science Test 6 Flashcards
Define Mechanical digestion
Breaks down food with no chemicals
Define Chemical digestion
Breaks down food with chemicals
What are the functions of the mouth?
takes in food and breaks it down with both chemical and mechanical digestion.
What is the enzyme contained in saliva?
amylase
What is the function of amylase?
It breaks starches into sugars
What is the function of the esophagus?
Connects your mouth to your stomach.
What is the esophagus lined with?
mucus
What is the function of the epiglottis?
flap of tissue that covers your wind pipe when you swallow
Define peristalsis
muscular contraptions that push your food down your esophagus
What is gastric juice made of?
HCL, Pepsin, and Rennin
What is the function of HCL
breaks downs minerals and kills bacteria
What is the function of Pepsin
breaks downs protein
What is the function of Rennin
breaks downs milk protein
Define ULCER (NOT ON TEST)
when stomach acids break through the mucus lining protecting the stomach and its painful. Thats the basics. (Answer supplied by Mila no notes just what I remember because this was blank)
True or False: your stomach is the largest organ.
FALSE YOUR LIVER IS!!!!
What is the function of the liver?
Makes bile
What is the function of bile?
breaks down fats and oils, or in other words, lipids
What is the function of the gall bladder?
It stores the bile
What is the function of the bile duct?
connects liver to the duodenum
Where is bile secreted?
duodenum
What is the function of the pancreas?
makes pancreatic juice
What is the function of pancreatic juice?
neutralizes stomach acids (and it breaks down all carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins)
Where is the pancreatic juice is secreted?
duodenum
What is the site for the most chemical digestion?
Your Small Intestine
What is the function of your small intestine?
Everything is broken down there, and it absorbs all the nutrients
What is the name of the first section of the small intestine?
duodenum
Why is the duodenum important?
It mixes the food with the pancreatic juice and the bile
What are proteins broken down into?
amino acids
What are carbohydrates broken down into?
glucose
What are fats broken down into?
glycerol and fatty acids
Define villi
the bumps lining the wall of your small intestine
What is the function of the villi?
Absorbs amino acids, glucose, and fatty acids
What is the function of the large intestine?
Collects feces and absorbs water from it
Define E. Coli.
E. Coli. is a bacteria that lives in the large intestines
What is the function of E. Coli.?
It helps digest food
What is the function of the anus?
The anus releases feces
What causes diarrhea?
Feces don’t stay in large intestine for long enough and so not enough water is absorbed
What causes constipation?
Feces stay in large intestine for too long and too much water is absorbed
What is the pathway of food through the digestive system?
Mouth ➡️ esophagus ➡️ stomach ➡️ small intestine ➡️ large intestine ➡️ anus
