science - sound Flashcards
what type of wave is a sound wave
Longitudinal
how does an echo happen
u cant be in a sound absorbing room
how can sound be absorbed
if it has soft furniture and carpets. The whole room needs to be plain with no furniture
which one has a higher air pressure, compression or rare factions
compression
which one has a lower air pressure, compression or rare factions
rare fraction
what does the pinna do
the pinna is made out of cartilage covered by skin, and funnels sound into the ear canal
what does the ear canal do
it is a short tube which transmits sound from the pinna to the eardrum
what does the ear drum do
It is a thin tough layer of tissue at the end of the auditory canal, sound waves make the ear drum vibrate
what do the ossicles do
three small bones that amplify and transmit the vibrations from the eardrum
what does the eustachian tube do
Connects the middle ear to the nasal cavity, it regulates the air pressure within the ear
what does the cochlea do
it is an organ filled with fluid, receptor cells change vibrations in the fluid into electrical impulses
what does the auditory nerve do
contains sensory neurons that send information to the brain for processing
what does sound travel faster through? solid, liquid, gas, vacuum
liquid
what is sound measured by
Decibels (dB)
How can sound be made louder
adding more energy and vibration
