science - Plants Flashcards
what does the sepal do
protects the unopened flower / the leaves
what do the petals do
brightly coloured to attract insects
what does the stamen do
male part of the flower - produces and disperses the pollen
what do the carpel do
female part of the flower - encloses the ovule
what does the anther do
produces and holds male sex cells/pollen
what does the ovule do
contains the female egg cell, which after fertilization, develops into a seed.
what does the stigma do
top part of the female flower, collects pollen grains
top part of the female flower, collects pollen grains
long tube of the stigma, connects it to the ovary
what does the ovary do
protects and houses the seed and ovule
what does the filament do
holds up the anther
what does the nectar do
attracts pollinators
explain the process of fertilization
- pollen sits on the stigma
2.pollen tube grows out of the grain, goes through the stigma and style and down into the ovary
3.the nucleus of the pollen cell travels down into the ovary - the nucleus of the pollen cell meets the nucleus of the ovary
5.the fertilized ovule will eventually develop into a new plant
why do plants need glucose
because its their food
how is glucose made?
photosynthesis - energy from the sun - glucose
what are some ways plant seeds/grains can be dispersed?
air, water, sticking to other animals furs, getting eaten but not fully digested therefor it is pooped out
what are the male parts of a plant?
anther and filament, stamen
what are the female parts of the plant?
stigma, style, ovary and ovule,
carpel
