science = respitory system Flashcards
what are the structures of the respiratory system
nasal cavity
mouth
trachea
lung
alveoli
bronchus
bronchiole
diaphragm
what is breathing in called
inhailing
what is breathing out called
exhailing
what is the diaphragm
muscular layer which separated the chest cavity from the erst of the body
what is the inter-coastal muscle
found in-between the ribs and controls the rib cages movement
what is the process of air going into your lungs
- air goes in through the nose and is warmed up
2.travels to the trachea
3.trachea is divided into two bronchi, one enters each lung
4.each bronchus branches off into smaller ones called bronchioles
5.air travels through each bronchiole - at the end, it enters the alveoli where gas exchange happens
what does the diaphragm do when u breathe in
-diaphragm contracts and goes up
-inter-coastal muscle contracts and goes up
This increases the chest size but decreases the air pressure inside
-sucks air into the lungs
what does the diaphragm do when u breathe out
–diaphragm relaxes and goes down
-inter-coastal muscle relaxes and goes down
-chest size decreases
-air pressure decreases
-air is forced out
what does lung capacity mean
the amount of air you can breathe out following a deep breath
what does diffusion mean
partcicle movement that causes particles in a liquid or gas to spread out evenly
how does gas exchange happen in the alveoli
- de-oxygenated blood goes in through the capillary near the alveoli
2.diffusion happens so the carbon dioxide goes into the alveoli and turns into oxygen and goes out into the bloodstream
what does asthma do
disease affecting the breathing system
what are the tiny hair like structures that help keep the mucus and dust out the lungs
cilla
what is the chemical in cigarettes that cause lung disease
tar
how does asthma affect the lungs
the bronchi either gets :swollen, produces extra mucus or the muscle tightens
how can it be triggered
by : laughing too much, pollen, dust, tobacco.
