science revision matter Flashcards
what is the smallest part of which an element can be broken down into called?
an atom.
when are compound formed?
when two or more different elements chemically bond together.
how do you separate a compound?
a chemical reaction.
how do you name a compound?
mention the metal first and then the non metal compound.
what will oxygen change to?
oxide.
what does the small number tell us?
the number of each element. it is found in front of the number.
what are polymers?
long chains of groups of atoms which are repeated many times.
what polymers are man-made?
synthetic.
what are group 1 on the periodic table?
alkali metals.
are group 1 metals softer or harder than other metals?
softer.
what is a trend?
the further down the group the metal is, the more vigorous the metal is.
what are group 7 on the periodic table?
halogens.
what properties do halogens have similar to non-metals?
having low melting and boiling points
not conducting electricity
moving down the groups the elements have an increased melting and boiling points.
what does chlorine change to?
chloride.
where do the most reacting halogens go to?
the top of the group.
