science revision energy Flashcards
what is work done?
is the energy transferred when a force is used to move an object.
what is energy measured in?
joules (J)
how do you calculate the work?
work done (J) = force (N) x distance moved (m)
what does a force multiplier do?
uses small input force ( what you apply) to generate a larger output force(what is created)
what is radiation?
is a method of transferring energy without the need for particles.
an example of radiation?
thermal energy being transferred from the sun to us through space. (where there are no particles).
what is infrared radiation?
is a type of wave just like light. the hotter an object is, the more infrared radiation it will give out.
what surfaces absorb radiation?
darker surfaces absorb and emit more infrared radiation. shiny and smooth surface absorb and emit less infrared radiation, instead reflecting it.
what can you view infrared radiation with?
a thermal imaging camera.
what is temperature measured with?
a thermometer.
what would have more thermal energy? a bath at 30* or a cup of tea at 90*?
a bath at 30* because it has more particles.
what is conduction?
transfer of thermal energy by the vibration of particles.
what does conduction happen more effectively in?
solids because the particles are always touching together.
what will happen in thermal energy?
the thermal energy will be transferred from the area with high thermal energy to the area with low thermal energy.
what is convection?
transfer of thermal energy in a liquid or gas.
