science revision bones Flashcards
What is the function of a skeleton?
To support your body like the heart and protects the organs like the lungs, the skeleton also enables the body to move and make blood cells.
What is a spongey bone
The spongey bone is the top of the bone which is made up of small needle like pieces of bone.
What is the function of the muscles
Muscles contract and relax to pull on the bones allowing us to move
What are the 2 main types of cells
Animals and plant cells
What are organelles
A small structure that is found in cells, such as Ribosomes, mitochondria, nucleus or chloroplasts
what is the function of Mitochondria
It releases energy
What is the function of a cell membrane
It controls what goes in and out of the cell
What is the function of the nucleus
It controls the cell and stores DNA
What is the function of ribosomes
Makes proteins
What is the function of cytoplasm
It is the jelly like substance where chemical reactions take place
What is a vacuole
a space or vesicle within the cytoplasm of a cell, enclosed by a membrane and typically containing fluid.
What is the function of chloroplasts
Chloroplasts absorbs light energy and use it to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen
What is the function of the root hair cell ?
To absorb water and minerals
What is the function of the red blood cells
Carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of our body. They also take wase like Carbon Dioxid to the lungs to breath out
What are the levels of organization in living organisms, from the simplest to the most complex
organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ system, living organism
what are the adaptations of sperm cells
They have a tail, have many mitochondria to provide energy and an acrosome (part of the tip of the head) to digest the egg membrane
what are the adaptations of red bloody cells
Have no nucleus so they can hold more oxygen, have a biconcave or disc-shape to absorb oxygen more quickly. They are also small and rounded to flow easily through tiny capillaries and veins.
what are the adaptions of muscle cells
Muscle fibers that contract and relax to change the cells shape, mitochondria to provide energy for movement
what is the adaption of a palisade cell
lots of chloroplasts to absorb sunlight and perform photosynthesis
what is the function of a palisade cell
photosynthesis
what is the function of a root hair cell
to absorb water and minerals
