Science physics energy Flashcards
Define the term energy
Energy is the ability to do work
State the unit energy is measured in
Energy is measured in Joules (J)
Define the term power
Power is the rate of energy transfer
State the unit we use to measure power
Power is measured in Watts (W)
State four ways we use energy in our
homes
Cooking, lighting, electrical appliances, heating
Define the term renewable energy
Renewable energy means it will never run out or can be replenished easily
Define the term non-renewable energy
Non-renewable energy is when it will run out and cannot be replenished
State the seven renewable energy
resources
Solar, wave, wind, tidal, hydroelectric, biomass and geothermal
What are the eight energy stores?
Chemical, Elastic potential, Electrostatic,
Gravitational potential, Kinetic, Magnetic, Nuclear, Thermal (Internal)
What is energy transfer?
The transfer of energy from one energy store to another
What are the four energy transfer types?
Mechanical, heating, electrical, radiation (light and sound)
What is the law of conservation of
energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred between energy stores
