Science - Magnetism Flashcards
What kind of force is Magnetism?
A Non-Contact Force.
What is the magnetic field?
It is the area around the magnet, where the force is felt.
What are permanent magnets?
They are magnets that always retain their magnetic properties.
Metals are able to feel magnetic forces, which metals?
Steel, Nickel (Ni), Cobalt (Co), and Iron (Fe).
Magnetic forces can either be…
Repulsive or Attractive.
What happens if two of the same pole (I.e., south and south) on the magnet try to connect?
They repel each other.
What happens if two different poles (north and south) on the magnet try to connect?
They attract towards each other.
Where in the magnetic field are the forces stronger and weaker?
Stronger = At the poles.
Weaker = Further from the poles.
What does the magnetic field look like? (This is the best description I could come up with.)
It goes out of the north pole into the south pole, the curve length depends on how far or close the north and south poles are to each other.
Earth has a magnetic field. How does this connect to the usage of compasses?
The rotating, magnetic needle on the compass lines up with the Earth’s magnetic field, with the ends pointing both north and south.
How does Aurora Borealis connect to the Earth’s magnetic field?
Charged particles are steered towards the Earth’s poles, creating the auroral ovals (lights).
What are Electromagnets?
They are magnets formed by an electrical current. It has the ability to turn it’s magnetic effect on or off.
