science inquiry Flashcards
what is science?
- inquiry process, a way of finding out new information
2. body of knowledge gained by observation
how do scientists avoid bias and error?
objectivity- (no allowing their own thoughts to influence how they see observations and results)
what is a hypothesis?
a possible explanation or solution to a problem being answered
what is a literature review?
the process of searching through materials (books internet, scientific reports) when searching for a solution to a problem to see what has already been discovered.
what is the difference between validity and reliability?
validity is if an experiment is testing what it’s supposed to test, reliability is the extent to which the experiment gives the same result each time
4 ethics involved in science
- voluntary participation
- informed consent
- risk of harm
- confidentiality
experimental errors and how they can be avoided?
- random errors: unpredictable errors,, can be reduced by taking several measurements of results and averaging them.
- systematic errors: occur because of the way the experiment is designed. only solution is to change experimental procedure
scientific model:
a simplified representation of an idea or process
experimental group:
the group you expose to change in an experiment
control group:
group you keep the same in an experiment
