Science Half Yearly Seperating Mixtures Flashcards
What does dissolve mean?
To mix a substance into a liquid so that it is no longer visible. The substance must be broken down into very small particles.
What is an aqueous solution?
A solution where water is the solvent.
What does soluble mean?
Able to be dissolved in the solvent
What does insoluble mean
Unable to be dissolved in the solvent
What is concentration?
The amount of solute in the solvent. A mean sure of the dissolved substance per volume of solvent.
What is a dilute solution?
A solution with a small amount of substance dissolved in it per volume of liguid
What is a concentrated solution?
A solution with a large amount of substance dissolved in it per volume of liquid.
What is saturation of a solution
The point at which no more substance will dissolve in a solvent at a particular temperature.
What is a suspension
A suspension is a mixture of gas or liquid and insoluble substance. The insoluble substance seperate after some time. If it is light it floats, if it is heavy it sinks.
What is sediment
The insoluble substance the settles out of a suspension and falls to the bottom of a container.
What is a colloid
A suspension where tiny particles of insoluble substances are spread evenly through another substance and do not separate
What is a mixture?
A combination of substances in which each keeps its own properties.
What is an emulsion?
A liquid mixed evenly with another liquid, which does not seperate.
Decanting
Pouring liquid off the top when the sediment has settled to the bottom.
Sieving
Separating particles of different sizes by allowing some to fall through holes in a container.
