Science 1/2 Yearly ecology Flashcards
Define ecosystem
Community of living things that interact with each other and with the environment in which they live.
Define habitat
The place where an organism lives
What are biotic factors
The living factors (organisms) in an ecosystem
Define producers
Organisms such as plants that use photosynthesis to make their own food from the sun
What is a scavenger
An animal that eats dead plants or animals.
What is a consumer
Organism that relies on other organisms for its food.
Herbivore
An animal that eats only plants
Carnivore
An animal that eats only other animals
Omnivore
Animal that eats plants and other animals
Predator
Animals that hunt other animals for food
Prey
Animal that is hunted for food
What is Photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide plus water makes sugar plus oxygen
What is consumer order?
The animals that eat the first order consumers are the second order consumers. The animals that eat the second order are the third order etc etc first order consumers eat the producer
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
A food chain only tells us part of the story of energy transfer as animals eat more more the a single species and are consumed by more than one too. A food web looks at all consumer relationships in an ecosystem and how the food chains connect together.
4 groups of decomposes
Flies, worms, some insects, bacteria, fungi
