Science Fair Flashcards
What is the dependent variable?
The dependent variable is the variable whose value depends on the other variables
What is the independent variable?
The independent variable affects the dependent variable. It stands alone and is not changed by the other variables.
What are the controlled variables?
The controlled variables are the variables that MUST remain the same throughout the experiment to get accurate and even results.
Compare qualitative and quantitative data
Qualitative- collected from observing text, audio, images etc. It cannot be counted or easily expressed in numbers
Quantitative- data that can be given a numerical value
Describe aim, hypothesis and risk assessment
Aim- describes the goal of the experiment/ what the scientist wants to find out
Hypothesis- an estimated guess of what will occur
Risk Assessment- outlines risk of the experiment and how to avoid them
Describe method and results
Method- step-by-step list of how to conduct the experiment
Results- often shown in a table or graph, includes what has been observed
Describe discussion and conclusion
Discussion- outlines and describes the results and any other observations, details the advantages and disadvantages of the experiment
Conclusion- refers to the aim of the experiment and states whether the hypothesis was proven correct or incorrect
Outline the steps of graphing data.
-Identify the variables
-Determine the scale of the graph
-Number and label the axis
-Title the graph
-Plot data
-Include measurements (cm, minutes)
