science - digestion, food tests, enzyme activity Flashcards
digestion
larger molecules broken down into smaller ones to be absorbed by the body
what happens in the mouth during digestion?
food is broken down mechanically and chemically(enzymes)
what does the oesophagus do during digestion
links the mouth to stomach
stomach function in digestion
contains hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria + enzymes to break down food
Pancreas
produces digestive enzymes
villi
structures in small intestine with large surface area
what happens to the food in digestion
THe digested food is absorbed into bloodstream in the small intestine
excess water is absorbed into large intestine
undigested food passes out as faeces
what liquid is used to test for starch and what is the positive result?
iodine, orange/ brown -> blue/black
test liquid + positive result for sugar +( 1 step)
benedict’s solution (place in boiling water for 5 mins) , blue -> green,yellow, orange, brick red
test liquid + positive result for protein
Biuret solution , blue -> purple
lipids test liquid + positive result + step
ethanol and pour into water, then shake , turns cloudy white
carbohydrase / amylase (breaks down __)
starch to sugar
protease( breaks down ____ -> __)
proteins -> amino acids
Lipase (breaks down ____ -> __)
lipids -> fatty acids + glycerol
what parts of the body does starch break down into sugar
mouth + small intestine
