science - Pathogens, vaccines + antibodies Flashcards
1
Q
Pathogen
A
micro-organism that causes disease
2
Q
how can you reduce the spread of dosease
A
- wash hands regulrly
- sanitising surfaces
- vaccination
3
Q
phagocytosis
A
White blood cells engulf pathogen
4
Q
antibodies
A
lock onto invading cells so they can be destroyed by White blood cells (antigens are destroyed)
5
Q
Antitoxins
A
Counteracts toxins produced by bacteria
6
Q
What does a vaccination do
A
protect from future infection
7
Q
steps of vaccination
A
- inject small amount of dead/ inactive pathogen
- antigens on pathogen cause body to produce antibodies to to attack them
- white blood cell can then rapidly mass produce to kill off pathogen
8
Q
painkiller
A
relieves pain and reduces symptoms
9
Q
what does a painkiller not do
A
tackle a disease or kill pathogens
10
Q
antibiotics
A
kills/ prevents growth of bacteria
