Science Chemistry Flashcards
Safety hazard symbols
A system of communicating how dangerous a substance is using symbols inside specifically coloured shapes.
WHMIS/MSDS
A system of symbols designed to help protect people who use potentially harmful substances.
Matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space.
Properties of matter
Characteristics that can be used to describe a substance.
States of matter
Refers to 3 common characteristics states in which matter can exist:
- solids
- liquid
- gas
Melting
Change of state from sold to liquid.
Evaporation
Change of state from liquid to gas.
Condensation
Change of state from gas to liquid.
Freezing
Change of state from liquid to solid.
Sublimation
change of state from a solid to a gas
Deposition
changeo of state from a gas to a solid
Physical Property
property that describes the physical appearance and composition of a substance
Examples of Physical Properties
Hardness, density, conductivity, solubility, ductility, etc.
Physical Change
A change in the appearance
Chemical Property
A property of behaviour of a substance when it undergoes a chemical reaction
Chemical Change
a reaction between two substances
Pure Substance
a substance that is made of one kind of matter
Element
Pure substance made of one atom
Compound
Pure substance made of two atoms or more
Mixtures
a combination of pure substances
Mechanical Mixture
you can see the substances
Solution
Appears to be one substance
Aqueous
solution where water is the solvent
Suspension
a cloudy mixture which can seperate
Colloid
a cloudy mixture that won’t seperate
Periodic Table
a chart that shows all the elements that humans have discovered.
Period
horizontal row of elements in the periodic table
Group
a vertical column of elements in the periodic table
Family
a vertical column of elements in the periodic table
Atom
the smallest part of an element
Nucleus
positively charged center of an atom
Protons
positively charged sub-atomic particle
Electrons
Negitively charged sub-atomic particle, found orbiting the nucleus
Neutrons
neutrally charged sub-atomic particle
Atomic Number
the number of protons in the element
Atomic Mass
average mass of one atom of an element
Mass Number
the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in an atom rounded version of the atomic mass
Metals
shiny, malleable, ductile elements that conduct electricity
Non-metals
dull, brittle elements that do not conduct electricity
Metaloids
elements that have both metallic and non-metallic properties
Alkali
group 1 elements in the PT not including Hydrogen. Most reactive
Alkaline Earth Metals
group 2 elements in the PT. Still highly reactive
Halogens
group 17 elements in the PT most reactive of non-metals
Noble Gases
group 18 elements in the PT most stable
Chemical Formula
a combination of symbols that represent a compound
Ions
atoms that have become electrically charged due to the lose or gain of electrons
Polyatomic Ions
groups of atoms acting a single ion
Ionic Compound
pure substance formed when a positively charged ion and negatively charged ion chemically combine
Molecule
group of atoms joined by covalent bonds
Molecular Compound
Pure substance formed when non-metallic atoms chemically combine
Chemical Reaction
a reaction that takes place between to or more substances
Reactants
a substance that reacts with another substance in a chemical formula
Product
the new substances formed by the reaction
Exothermic
a chemical reaction that releases energy (heat out)
Endothermic
a chemical reaction that absorbs energy ( heat in)
Combustion
a chemical reaction that occurs when oxygen reacts with a substance creating carbon dioxide and water
Corrosion
a slow chemical reaction that occurs when oxygen in the air reacts with a metal
Cellular Respiration
a chemical reaction that occurs in our cells similar to combustion
Open System
an experiment in which products can escape
Closed System
an experiment in whish no products can escape
Law of Conservation of Mass
the principle that matter is neither created or destroyed only changed into another form
Calalyst
a substance that helps a chemical reaction to proceed more quickly
Enzymes
a catalyst involved in chemical reactions that occur in living things
The four factors that can affect the rate at which a chmical reaction can occur
Presence of calalysts
Concentration
Temperature
Surface Area
