Science chapter 6 Flashcards
What is natural selection
The species with the favorable trait survive longer and reproduce, passing down their traits based on their environments.(the environment selects who survives)
What is artificial selection
humans select who survive.
Adaption
a trait that gives an organism an advantage to survive.
What is variation.
The offspring are not the same caused by sexual reproduction.
What is competition
organism compete for limited resources to survive.
What is survival of the fittest.
The organism with the best chance of surviving and then they pass down their traits.
What is a fossil.
any trace or remains of an organism.
What is Amber and Ice
an organism will not decay is its completely protected from decomposers(bacteria)
What is petrification
minerals replace the tissues of organisms including bones
What are casts mold and imprints
an organism is covered in layers of rock particles which harden while the organism decays.
What is Relative dating sedimentary rock.
compare fossils found in different layers of sedimentary rock to establish the age.
What is Radioactive dating
scientist compare the amount of radioactive substance with the amount of stable substances.
what is a Homologous structure
parts of different organisms that are similar in structure, give evidence that these organism have common ancestor.
what is a Analogous structure
structures that are similar in function but not in structure.
what is a Vestigial structure
body part that is reduced in size and does not have a function but tells us about the organisms ancestory
