Gentics Flashcards
What is a trait?
When organisms reproduce, traits are passed from parent to offspring.
What does hereditary mean?
The transfer of traits from one generation to another.
What is an allele?
A form of a gene.
What does Purebred?
Carries two copies of the same allel.
What does hybrid ?
Carries two different allels.
What is a dominant allele?
The form of the gene that masks/overpowers the other form of gene.
What is a recessive allele?
The form of the gene that gets masked/overpowered by the dominant allele.
What is a punnet square?
A diagram used by geneticists to determine the probability (chance) of an offspring having a particular phenotype
What does homozygous mean?
The same in relation to alleles.
What does heterozygous mean?
Different in relation to alleles.
What is a genotype?
The genetic makeup of an organism.
What is a phenotype?
The appearance of an organism based on phenotype and outside factors.
What does a gene do?
Genes determine a trait.
What is a chromosome?
Something that contains DNA.
What does the law of incomplete dominance state?
One gene does not completely mask the other.
The heterozygous genotype results in an intermediate phenotype.
What is a gender linked disorder?
The gene for the disorder is carried on the x chromosome.
What is a pedigree?
A family tree
What do genes do?
Genes determine what trait you inherit. Gregor Medel showed the law of dominance in his experiments with pea plants. It showed that one allele is more dominant then the other therefore the organism had the dominant trait.
What i
A way to determinate blood type.
What i hemophelia?
When your blood does not clot quick enough
What is being colorblind.
When you can not differenciate between colors.
What do you have to have in order to be colorbling or have hemophelia
both of your xs musr
